@idzie@kolektiva.social I live in a sannàkkômuk (“difficult district”) named so by Indigenous peoples for its many swamps, ravines, gneiss deposits, and steep creeks. Nearby trees are mainly hemlock with various types of birches taking over via succession. Native plants include mountain laurel, ferns, and raspberries. Mammals are well represented with black bears, porcupines, and black squirrels. Many forest loving warblers migrate here. Fireflies light up the night while katydids provide the soundtrack.

@danmccullough@ecoevo.social @idzie@kolektiva.social How are your hemlock doing? Do you have the woolly adelgid up there? In the Southern Appalachians, hemlocks replaced chestnuts as our biggest trees, and now we're watching the forests completely transform again.
