Turns out this cable runs hot. Too hot. It's a USB-C to analogue audio converter. The black near the connector isn't supposed to be there, but meant to be hidden under the silvery coating that is visible on the rest of the plug. But it somewhat melted. And now it no longer functions (does not do a USB connection anymore). I replaced it with its sibling, which presumably shares the same design flaw.
