I think it's because people have been lauding the benefits of LLMs for about four years now, and it's only like in the last six months or so that they've actually become useful. And that's not even true across the board.
It's hard to tell truth from lie when the message is unchanged even though the technology has changed.

And also when the lies are coming from people who stand to make unbelievable amounts of money from these things, and are still lying ridiculously. I think they're still wobbly and the people making them are still not sure why / how they work exactly, but they are getting better fast. I stand by the "useful tool" assessment right now.
