Intermission Moulin Rouge thoughts: 1. Satine is SO SPARKLY 🤩🤩🤩 2. I'd love to see this show be staged in a venue like the Spiegeltent. Same plot, same script, same music, etc - but in a space where the separation between audience and performance is not that stark. It's making me think of Darren Hayes's latest album HOMOSEXUAL, which didn't really grab me as much as his other work did. Then I saw him perform at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl this year and I understood: he needs to perform at gay clubs. Sweaty queer bodies close together, the music bathing over everyone with ultraviolet light. THAT'S where that album makes the most sense. Yeah the big concert arena shows or the big mainstage shows are great, but why not bring the audience closer to you? Be both the focus and not? What would that be like? 2.1 Darren Hayes actually did audition for Ewan McGregor's role in the Moulin Rouge movie. Imagine THAT alternate universe. 3. Satine performing while still having TB is underrated disability rep. It also makes me think about how I (and potentially others) have had to step back from performing because multiple bouts of Covid took my stamina away but not a lot of directors really understand and want to work with that to make the stage still accessible. Or how you have to push yourself anyway because it's either mask hardcore to get by or die penniless - even if pushing yourself will send you quicker to your grave. What would a more modern day Satine, with Long Covid or fibromyalgia or CFS instead, look like? 4. DID I JUST GET FREAKIN RICKROLLED BY THIS DAMN SHOW
