With all the chatter and calls to not jump ship to another app but stay and fight the good fight on bsky...I've been having some thoughts/feelings about it. Reposting my thread from there, reworded Bsky is fun! I love all my furry friends and artists and porn and kinky stuff and our trans brothers, sisters, and siblings. Yall did make the site popular! ...but also, we didn't make it profitable. I've been happily using it and enjoying it, but I have no delusions that it's THE final place. Bsky the company needs to make money someday, VC funding will only get them so far (even if they are a PBC). And that means either paying for the site or dealing with ads and all the baggage associated. I think we also need to have online spaces we own. Not just rental space we occupy. ‪ I've been working on my own stuff in the background for this inevitability, but it's nothing that's ready or polished or anything I'd recommend widely. However, with Blacksky (and I guess Northsky) taking shape I am optimistic. ATProto's alleged ability to migrate data makes those promising too. ‪ Last bit of advice from someone who's been around the internet a long time. For sure, keep making noise there and pushing the boundaries 🤘 Buuuuut also don't put all your resources and attention in one thing. No service is permanent or infallible. Bsky will fade. Value community over spaces.
