What if I told you that we could reduce the energy used per useful AI output by ~100x through existing techniques? https://blog.dougbelshaw.com/ais-energy-problem-is-a-systems-problem (I'm "looking forward" to people replying before actually, you know, reading the post. Maybe don't be that person?) #AI #SystemsThinking #Policy

@dajb@social.coop I strongly agree whilst violently disagree while also being open to the concept. Also, didn't read :P

@dajb@social.coop Energy per token != Carbon per token. I don't care if I burn through countless of carbon neutral tokens IE an overnight low run process that runs from energy collated by Solar. I care about the carbon footprint of that energy. Do I care if it's 100x more efficient? Yes. LocalLLMs suck compared to cloud at working on large LLMs at the speed a human needs. If I could make my local LLM 100x more efficient and behave like a cloud provider I'm all ears :) But that's just my opinion :)

@dajb@social.coop it would still be a technology being used to do massive harm. And no, I don't want to read the post even if it suggests energy use might be reduced significantly. It's not relevant imo because individual mitigations don't change the picture.
