@pluralistic@mamot.fr I had to cave and install the app because I was having issues. I used a burner email and the app is *so* much worse than I thought. Turns out, the reason I was having so much pain using it is that if you *dont* use the app, the default setting is maximum output (even if you try to manually adjust using the buttons on the actual pump.) Even better, the app has an Enhance My AI button 😖

@mclare@recurse.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr most fitness trackers - and I’m not even taking about “free” apps but devices you pay for - also won’t give you the data; they require accounts for who knows what nefarious purposes. Needless to say, I won’t buy one. *** Account - forget about it, unless I can use a fake email, the data is not particularly private, and I do not pay anything. Phone number to create an account - go **** yourself, provincial spy from the 19th century.

@mclare@recurse.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr this shit is just sick and way to many people are ok with giving corporations all this control.

@mclare@recurse.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr Makes me appreciate that my breast pump only had an on/off button.

@mclare@recurse.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr back in my day, breast pumps had an on switch and an off switch of course, they were also so bad (painful, ineffective, loud, embarrassing) that I quit my job rather than keep trying to use one if that part hasn't gotten better there's no reason to bother with the privacy invasion as well

@mclare@recurse.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr Seems to me that a breast pump has only one job.

@mclare@recurse.social I have a CPAP that I cannot update, because I don't use the app, that forces to make an account, and there is no firmware to download. …despite the device having a full-sized, user-accesible, SD card. ('Murican manufacturer) @pluralistic@mamot.fr

@mclare@recurse.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr let me start by saying it's unconscionable that we have to treat items we ostensibly own as hostile. These types of situations are a good use for those old phones you've got kicking about. Without a SIM/service, they'll have difficulty sending surveillance data back to our corporate overlords. That may not work in this instance, but for a lot of things you just need the app to control the device. #InfoSec #BigTech
