Ah, Stoke is plausible. I’ll have to ask my sewing ladies, who are about half way between there and where my maternal grandparents were (Dukinfield).
As far as I can remember, the very prosaic “clothes airer” was most common.

@flick@spinster.club I have/had family in Dukinfield, a pair of great Aunts that used to run a wool shop. They were venerable spinsters themselves. 'Clothes airer' 😑 Sounds like some gender neutral BS to avoid the word 'maiden'.
