@scalzi@mastodon.social One of the good things about a Pixel is their long support lifecycle. Absent an astonishing amount of abuse, I can't think of a good reason to replace a Pixel annually. And keeping the phone longer means not having to spend hours transferring data across and setting up new phones constantly.

@scalzi@mastodon.social I got lucky when I bought my Pixel 5 in Dec 2020. It still worked great after 5 years, was as snappy as ever, although it did have occasional bouts of senility. Longest I ever went without replacing my phone. Got a Pixel 9 this past December, but installed GrapheneOS as soon as I opened it. First step toward getting Google's bullshit out of my life.

@scalzi@mastodon.social more for less definitely doesn't sound good. Maybe enough people will do the same and send a message?

@scalzi@mastodon.social I was kind of expecting this myself and nabbed the foldable version of the 10 a couple of months ago. Hopefully it'll last through the bubble. Wanted a foldable with lots of memory after I discovered you can run Linux containers with a full desktop environment on these things, and that common creative programs (GIMP, Kdenlive, Blender) run on them. So I use mine to work on artwork/videos to supplement my books. This obviously pushes it to do some things that it wasn't intended to do, so a more expensive, less capable device is definitely something I wanted to avoid.
