@mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place General anaesthetic is a major event. Some people go into comas and never come out. Other serious things can happen. TLDR: it's not just a sleep, it's effectively a temporary induced coma, with all the possibilities for neurological sequelae like this. Most people aren't so lucky, and if they suffer effects, it is not as pleasant as ongoing pleasant music.

@datum@zeroes.ca @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place Sounds like the music wasn't even necessarily pleasant, just something that she could eventually learn to manage

@datum@zeroes.ca @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place I think I take your point, but there are many dental operations that I completely fear with any modern alternative that they promise me “you’ll remember nothing” — no thanks, I’m too sympathetic with my inebriated self Also, the happy gas works scarily on my autistic mind

@datum@zeroes.ca I listened some neurologist debating an hinduist anesthesist claiming that because they can't tell what consciousness is, and they don't really understand what happens precisely under general anesthesia, it might well be like being in induced death for what they can tell. This came from the materialist debating the spiritualist, so to speak, as an aside on a debate about consciousness. It really stuck with me.
