A police state can easily introduce IDs if they weren't there before - it's not a prerequisite and doesn't make it more or less likely. Police in a state without IDs can still arrest you and keep you until you've proven your identity. ad 2) IDs make identity theft harder: more difficult to falsify than a bank statement or utility bill and IDs /2

    @TimWardCam@c.im @jonpsp@mstdn.social @edzilla@social.edzilla.info @AlisonW@fedimon.uk are not a single system that replaces all else. You still have to break into all the other systems as well, an ID does not give you unchecked access to all aspects of your life. You need to have it to open a bank account, but you can't access your bank account with your ID. Online services require your ID plus a specialised app plus a six digit PIN - safer than a credit card. Identity theft in Germany /3
