If the universe is a simulation, that begs the next question: a simulation of what? Or not a simulation so much as a meta reality version of Conway's Game of Life, with a simple set of rules and a starting condition. Press start and let it run. Everything from gravity to human consciousness is just an emergent property of cellular automata. We are all just the equivalent of "gliders". If so, wheee!
