It varies by state, but I haven't seen outright bans, but I remember one bill would establish an "approved printers list" for that state banning all but explicitly approved printers. Other states are looking at requiring any print to be verified as "not a gun part" which isn't a thing you can do in reality, so the expectation is that they'll force every design to be submitted to a central service for checking before printing.

@himbovoorhees@elekk.xyz But yeah, the justification is usually citing "ghost guns" or something comparable. Most folks agree that these justifications are mostly a smokescreen. What the real motivation is, we're unfortunately bare on information about who is driving this push. The age verification we at least know is primarily driven by Facebook and the reasons are clear enough. For the 3D printer laws, I've been unable to find a uniting factor.
