@rauschma when Matthew wrote this in 2017 I sent him screenshots of Fira Code in Vim admirably rendering ligatures correctly: rendering them in Haskell mode but, crucially, *not* rendering them in HTML mode. His fear, “any global ligature substitution is guaranteed to be semantically wrong part of the time“ seemed misplaced since editors seemed much smarter than this. However, that experiment fails to replicate today 😢 both Vim and VS Code in HTML mode, with either Fira Code and Monospace Krypton, will happily render `<b>=hi</b>` with ≥ 🤦 I don’t know why this regression happened, maybe editors got sloppy, maybe fonts got sloppy, maybe macOS got sloppy?
