@calcifer@masto.hackers.town bigger-pay’s charm is often cancelled by the responsibilities of managing. The principal charm is practicing ‘what matters to mgmt’ thinking, so that as one steps back to hands-on, one can manage one’s managers.
I don’t mean that as manipulate. Just, hone in on what they value: status communication, no interpersonal strife/drama, early warning when tasks are at risk of not meeting goals or deadlines, good summaries that distill days of good work down into a memo…
I was a good manager, and didn’t like chunks of it. I love being hands on and in the loop and no-drama.

@cascheranno@hachyderm.io I generally haven’t had pay increases to be management; most places I’ve worked it was a lateral move. I quite enjoy leading teams, but I get itchy to be hands-on after a bit. And a little exhausted from the “managing up” part. And I never want to be a VP again because it’s all trash fire all the time.
