Honestly I took this job because I was getting a bit burned out being a manager and wanted to be more hands-on again. But apparently I’m drifting into management anyway, maybe it’s time to move on again.

@calcifer@masto.hackers.town bigger-pay’s charm is often cancelled by the responsibilities of managing. The principal charm is practicing ‘what matters to mgmt’ thinking, so that as one steps back to hands-on, one can manage one’s managers. I don’t mean that as manipulate. Just, hone in on what they value: status communication, no interpersonal strife/drama, early warning when tasks are at risk of not meeting goals or deadlines, good summaries that distill days of good work down into a memo… I was a good manager, and didn’t like chunks of it. I love being hands on and in the loop and no-drama.
