Casually people see all books of Lord Of the Rings as one book, but every single edition has its own isbn. Sometimes you might want to link to a specific edition. A very specific books that has a very specific cover and illustrations, for example. But for the purpose of work recommendations you probably want to link to a work, which includes all publications. And that might be a whole bunch of isbns.
