We would still need fast communications and some kind of electronic systems to transfer money quickly between people no matter what - who the fuck wants to deal with cheques any more? There was a lot of fraud with cheques as you couldn't do any real-time checks to see if the person actually had the money in an account. Cheques had their use, but I'm glad they are dying out. Decentralisation, while sensible, would have not fixed the amount of transactions or speed problem. What's the non-computer alternative, Hawala??
