Imagine you lived in a world, where people didn't believe in the concept of training.
Maybe not fully disbelieve it, but treat the concept as strange, distant and abstract, like it exists somehow, but has nothing to do with them and doesn't affect their lives.
They would believe, that people don't build muscles with physical labor, but the other way around, some people just do physical labor, because they're strong.

In my experience, this is not that far away from how people treat mental abilities and psychological traits. As if people just are or aren't "intelligent", as if people just are or aren't "moral". Of course you could argue, that there is a very strict limit to how much people can improve and maybe, mentally that limit is reached way sooner, than physically for many people, but there is room, often a lot of unused room for improvement. 2/
