The more time passes, the more convinced I am at the importance of people owning their own personal computer. Laptop or desktop, doesn't matter. But having a machine that you own, or at least a shared family computer, is, if not a right, then at least a privilege we should fight not to lose entirely to rented cloud compute. Looking over the past decade-ish, I don't think this can even be called alarmist anymore. It really feels like The Powers That Be are trying, little bit by little bit, to make decentralised compute directly owned by end users more and more unattainable. More than that, particularly lately it also feels like they're not even bothering trying to hide their goals like they used to, which is the real slap in the face. (I'm also not going to pretend that I'm the first person to have this thought. It's just been hitting me hard enough lately that I've needed to put it out there somewhere, myself.) #pc #personalcomputer #ownyourhardware
