Also almost all the trans men I know report that they became *LESS* aggressive on T. And frankly I think we should listen to them when they talk about the experience of being men.

@joelle@social.joelle.us So do trans men show any aggressivness toward Thanksgiving dishes or turkey carcasses? My anecdotal observation would indicated cis men readily express calmness, if not sedataion, consistently under these circumstances, except when the TV makes them twitch and squeal like cats watching a bird video. Yeah, it's funny, but it's not.

@joelle@social.joelle.us to be fair, I also became less aggressive after going on E. I think it all boils down to repressed feelings, no? The average man in this society is taught to never let his feelings show or get ostracised for it. Just the sheer amount of turmoil I had to keep bottled up before transitioning was … terrible, and overwhelming at times. A lot could be solved by normalizing emotional vulnerability for men. Or in general, really, but men definitely have it worse.

@joelle@social.joelle.us I feel happier instead of aggressive??? I used to be aggressive before HRT??? It's weird how bio essentialism affects us even between other trans people, it makes no sense.

  • @joelle@social.joelle.us idk if it was the T or adapting to people being much more sensitive about me as a man expressing strong emotions which encouraged me to not show them until i stopped feeling a connection to anger & spite. Either way i'm pretty happy with it. Less anxiety. I kinda feel the problem is more with teaching/reinforcing through coercion and socialization - both between members of similar and different genders - toxic behaviors and negative sex-based stereotypes rather than a hormone.

@@joelle@social.joelle.us I read some interesting studies about that. Apparently men who are violent tend to have low T, not high T. High T men tend to be more calm and in control. Still domineering, but calm and in control. You also see testosterone spike in women in certain situations. For example, if someone is threatening a woman's children, the "mama bear" comes out and she protects them. That response is aided by the release of testosterone. or at least coincides with it. This includes a temporary increase in strength and power, which helps her save her child.

  • @joelle@social.joelle.us This is truth! I was so angry and unhappy as a woman, I was downright volcanic until I was almost thirty and started therapy. (The rage wasn't one of the instigating factors but it definitely didn't help.) I started T at 38 and it felt like all that anger drained away pretty much instantly. I have never been so chill and so happy as I have been since I started transition. And honestly the story is pretty much the same for every transmasc I know. We're calmer and happier and our 'natural' aggression has vanished. It's almost like being ourselves is a massive relief and a much-needed catharsis!

@joelle@social.joelle.us My cis male testosterone injecting bodybuilder ex reported the same. He compared it to alcohol both in how it can simplify what is already there and how it can be hidden behind.

  • @joelle@social.joelle.us I became more able to express anger when I had to, but it was more like a block being removed from my inner voice, not that the anger got stronger. It stopped being expressible only as tears. And I was angrier for awhile as I got through processing forty years of being pissed at the treatment I got. But underneath it all, I am WAY less angry and aggressive now. Life just baseline feels better. I do also think that some of my anger dissipated because I'm not facing daily misogyny anymore. :/
