@cycling_on_rails@mastodon.social @stefanlindbohm@mastodon.social On the Dutch Nightjets, the seating carriages are quite busy. The trick is to make them available as very late or very early day trains – those trains have quite a few scheduled stops through the night – which helps quite a bit with the profitability of the overall service.

  • @partim@social.tchncs.de @stefanlindbohm@mastodon.social In principle a traditional 6-couchette compartment can also be used as a 6-seat compartment by folding the middle beds. So the use case where a seating-only area makes sense is narrow IMO. You could arrange the booking system to fill compartments by sleeping/seating category to avoid clashes, but still have flexibility if today many people seat and tomorrow many people sleep.

@partim@social.tchncs.de @cycling_on_rails@mastodon.social @stefanlindbohm@mastodon.social That might be a quite specific case as many Nightjets pass Frankfurt in the middle of the night and are the only option to catch some early morning flights. In Sweden, where most night trains run through rural areas in the small hours and the monring, it might be different.
