In Germany, it wasn't just new leadership but the complete dismantling (by executions, in some cases) of the party that had held power.
Unless that happens to Republicans (and, barring civil war, it likely won't), the US may simply go through cycles of reasonable leadership followed by utter insanity, and no one will do business with them if it may last longer than an election cycle.

@starraven@mastodon.scot @adamrice@c.im oh yeah, the US could lose another two generations to life in a fascist hell hole before the "two generations of recovery" actually starts. Like, maybe it's more accurate to say "two generations after the reckoning starts". But that's less compact and a lot more complicated.
