In my own experience, identifying as a lesbian (or looking like one by having a masculine appearance) has often felt safer in the tech industry as a woman. The biggest form of discrimination in this male-dominated field is still misogyny: coworkers who don’t see women as peers, but as potential romantic interests. The more feminine you appear, the more you’re perceived as “other” in an environment shaped around masculinity. And when people don’t see you as an equal, they’re less likely to consider you for opportunities, important projects, or promotions. That’s how gender gaps continue to persist.
