I'd be interested in testimonies of other "semi-maintainers". I consider myself as a "semi-maintainer" of OpenJPEG (maybe "25%-maintainer" would be more accurate), given there is no complementary half/75%. That is I only care about fixing issues that directly affect me/my customers, occasionally merging a "trivial" pull request or doing minimal work to keep CI working. But I'm generally not willing to dig in code I'm not familiar with, including addressing security issues. What to do... ?

@EvenRouault@mastodon.social We should all recognize the existence and dignity of the 'good enough' code: code that works enough as is, is maintained enough, and does not need big evolutions. They often call that a dead-end code, but I disagree. It is simply good enough for its purpose, and fuck the majority.

@EvenRouault@mastodon.social This feels like Y2K, except there's no code owner with an incentive to fix the security issues. For projects with 100% maintainership, we can probably weather it, but you're right, the not-quite-dead projects that are still being used... they are about to become unclosed security holes.

@Shadowfetch@indieweb.social @EvenRouault@mastodon.social I’ve been meaning to do more or less the same thing for some of my stuff. I like your wording, might end up using it!

@Shadowfetch@indieweb.social @ajnn@snabelen.no "this software Is distributed as is, no warranty", that's how the GPL words it, more or less

@EvenRouault@mastodon.social be careful... if you decapitate a JPEG library three more sprout in its place.

@EvenRouault@mastodon.social I'd do nothing I don't need or I'm payed to do. Let's get back to the basis of this. When did we start feeling pressured to fix other people's problems ? If anyone asks for help, teach them to fish.
