This little spring ran in a short ochre smear to the Limb Brook, a stream which itself joins the River Sheaf. Both the Brook and the Sheaf used to be boundaries for the early medieval kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. 'Sheaf' itself is from the Old English sceað, 'boundary, border'. sceað feld (sheaf-feld) being the border fields. Another reason Sheffield is what it is.
