Signal would’ve been a nightmare for spoofing, fraud, and all other kinds of abuse if it didn’t use phone numbers. Matrix XMPP decentralization is a pipe dream for purists who don’t actually have anyone to talk to.

I am glad they introduced usernames and are moving away from requiring phone numbers but they left a lot of people vulnerable until then.
