I can't take it seriously when step 1 is phone number harvesting. They've given me no actual reason to believe they're any more private than all the bazillion "private and free" apps in the various mobile stores. I'm sure I could technically trick many of these into using fake phone numbers, but I can just not use them, either.

I understand your position although honestly it seems like picking a fight to pick a fight. What you want can be accomplished. It's inconvenient and they need to fix it, but it can be accomplished. And given the alternatives, it's the best way to put regular people on a secure network that they'll find intuitive enough to use.
