See also Ed Zitron's "Where are all the data centres?" The gulf between big tech's announced data centre capacity and reality grows larger by the day. While the Utah slop factory is planned for 9GW, Ed reminds us that nobody has actually built even a 1GW data centre yet. The AI industry is a ponzi scheme based largely on smoke and mirrors. Bring on the bubble burst! https://www.wheresyoured.at/where-are-all-the-data-centers/ @futuresprog@mastodon.nzoss.nz @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

@BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @futuresprog@mastodon.nzoss.nz @JulianOliver@mastodon.social Basically, if your business plan has 1 GW on it, all you need is a piece of land with a shed on it and a genset powering a rack with a few GPU blades in it. Call that Phase One and send out the press releases saying it's operational.

  • This is definitely good to remember. These are all aspirational bullshit and designed to pump markets and their own share price. Oops, I mean, “forward looking statements”. Looking at NG prices I see there is news that Certarus has announced it will commission a new CNG hub southeast of Salt Lake City to provide gas to a 60MW data center. @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

@BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @futuresprog@mastodon.nzoss.nz @JulianOliver@mastodon.social Ed Zitron, whom a couple of other commenters also mentioned, is the best. He has stacks of facts up to the ceiling. So if you're sitting there saying, "Wait. What? Ten thousand investors and Sam Altman can't _all_ be delusional!" go read Zitron. Then go looking for the opposing facts that show it's not a delusion and ... there aren't any. He's a great No!-I'm-not-crazy reality check. He had a good piece just recently on depreciation. You can bet your Sunday hat on businesses taking the tax deductions for depreciating equipment. The depreciation clock starts running once equipment is in service. Zitron looks at the books of some of these companies, and the depreciation isn't happening on the same scale as the delusions. (And if and when it does start happening, they don't show the revenue coming in to cover that level of depreciation. Forcing everyone to use Gemini won't do it unless they can also force everyone to pay $$/minute....)
