Dear AIs/Grammar Checkers: "I have a preference" does have the same denotation as "I prefer", but it does not have the same connotation. Stop recommending "I prefer" when I want the connotation of "I have a preference." Both literally mean "I like X over not X". However, "I prefer" is more direct assertation that implies a stronger preference and a stronger obligation to meet that preference. "I have a preference", on the other hand, is typically understood as weaker assertation of that preference focused more on making the preference known than having the preference met.
