@halfbyte@ruby.social I sort of agree on the LLM part but let me push back a little on the complexity point. I don’t think complexity in absolute terms has a high floor. There’s a lot of software that can be a simple rails app with simple db and a few views. Like, you can spin up a blog in 15 min, it’s not that complex. An app can be a web page of simple HTML with a single inline script. There’s a lot of software of this level of complexity that was never made. Market too small or problem too niche. LLMs can handle this level of complexity even if it’s not entirely boilerplate. I also don’t think there’s a requirement for an architect for this low-complexity software. The code might be not pretty but it’s enough to be functional. It’s unlikely maintenance cost will overburden anyone here. We still don’t see much of it though. As an example, when Artemis flew around the moon someone vibed a dashboard showing the craft position and a bunch of telemetry and some other stuff. The ui looked slick and the number were taken from NASA. It was quite impressive actually. And if LLM can handle that why don’t we see much anything of similar or lower quality? Another example, actually a bunch of example is Simon Willison’s vibed tools. He has over a 100 of them. Most are simple but some are more complex. It’s clearly possible to vibe functional software with LLMs. We still don’t see much of it. 🤷
