I'm pretty sure that's how Microsoft Word 6.0 on Windows 3.11 behaved back in the 1990'es, and I would be very surprised if it had taken Apple this long to figure it out. In fact, it makes too much sense to be a Microsoft invention, I would have guessed that they copied it from Apple, not Apple copying it from Microsoft. I mean that's how it usually works, isn't it? Microsoft copies the good ideas from Apple (often badly) and later Apple copies the bad ideas from Microsoft.
