@rootcompute@mastodon.social I've gone one further and claimed all software should be forced open source after an initial profiteering period, the way patents work for inventions, and that period should end after 5 years of not actively selling the software no matter how long its supposed to be.

@mikebabcock@floss.social I think this is reasonable, too. I actually probably would have mentioned it in my original post if I didn't anticipate some pushback about the merits of proprietary code in business dealings. Not really my area of expertise either, but I feel like at least a free download of the software would ensure people could preserve the software & temper concerns about reverse engineering new versions of software, I guess. It should be considered the bare minimum, yet is so far from the norm
