@anna I joined Mastodon shortly after Musk took over Twitter because I didn't want him in control of my data but I followed a bunch of people that I trusted for information on COVID and Aussie politics. I started out on the "main" mastodon.social instance, which was run by the guy who started the protocol Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse uses then moved to kolektiva.social when I began to disagree with the values of that instance (censoring of Palestinians and focus on federating with Zuckerberg's Threads). After ditching Facebook at the start of the pandemic and eventually deleting my largely unused Instagram, this is pretty much my only social media and can be a good place to keep across what's happening in the world when I don't trust a lot of the news sources to tell the full story. I probably don't use it to its full extent as I know the Fediverse is much bigger than just Mastodon, but I know that I could optimise my experience if I choose to and I'm happy that I can move instances at any time if I disagree with the positions of the people running the one I'm using.
