This opacity is also present in gesture recognition and parameter mapping but is most strongly pronounced in slop. Other 'closed' ideas share this form of thinking. My own conclusion: slop is not a separate and unique thing, but slop thinking - the situation that makes slop attractive - is already present in some overly goal oriented systems, especially when the goals relate to consumption rather than the musical object itself.

    ..... The next speaker wonders if the future of composition involves LLMs. One day will composers be freed of writing music? One can only hope!

    @celesteh@hachyderm.io Taking that thought outside the sphere of music: yes, that makes sense to me. I use LLMs at work when I need to quickly whip up a few paragraphs of bland corpo-speak, and don’t feel like expending part of my one true precious soul on writing a sales presentation. That happens within a very goal-oriented system, with limited degrees of freedom. The tool performs well here. But “AI” music? I’d rather listen to a jackhammer outside my window.
