This opacity is also present in gesture recognition and parameter mapping but is most strongly pronounced in slop.
Other 'closed' ideas share this form of thinking.
My own conclusion: slop is not a separate and unique thing, but slop thinking - the situation that makes slop attractive - is already present in some overly goal oriented systems, especially when the goals relate to consumption rather than the musical object itself.

@celesteh@hachyderm.io Taking that thought outside the sphere of music: yes, that makes sense to me. I use LLMs at work when I need to quickly whip up a few paragraphs of bland corpo-speak, and don’t feel like expending part of my one true precious soul on writing a sales presentation. That happens within a very goal-oriented system, with limited degrees of freedom. The tool performs well here. But “AI” music? I’d rather listen to a jackhammer outside my window.
