RE: https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/116045968768099650 This is so true. I would highly recommend that every white man commute to work or around town on a bike once a week or so. You get just a taste of the kind of vulnerability everyone else feels much of the rest of the time, and that we so rarely experience otherwise.

@SamUpstate@hachyderm.io @SRLevine@neuromatch.social I don’t commute by bike for the near-death experiences but you do get to see how our cities and towns are designed for cars. And in my town the old “deed-restricted” neighborhoods with one way in and out make it impossible to get around easily.

@SamUpstate@hachyderm.io This works in all ways. For me, cycling was key to understanding a couple of feminist basic principles and ideas. "Death by a thousand papercuts". "Victim blaming" etc. etc.

@SamUpstate@hachyderm.io In the early 2000s, a columnist for the *Fort Worth Star Telegram* tried an experiment to see if he could go without driving for a month. This columnist lived in the Summerfields area, near where I've lived for the past 25 years. He chiefly worked at the Star Telegram HQ in downtown Fort Worth. 1/6
