@neil I'm old enough to know. In my early childhood my dad was hacking student registrations at Leeds University using a valve computer that filled an old chapel. He cut the cost of major print runs by modem connecting the UCCA (later UCAS) Cheltenham mainframe to mainframes at largest UK Universities in the early seventies, in the late seventies providing videotex information to schools over Prestel.
