I was today years old when I got real clear that democracy never existed on paper. It’s about people. And the deceit of the powerful is that if it’s on paper you don’t have to engage directly, show up, ask questions, and run for office. That gas lighting has been very effective. After all, we can usually find other things to do. Those halcyon days never existed and if we want the right to consent we have to exercise it.
