“Neural networks” are the Omegaverse of computing. It’s awful fan fiction *at best* and deceptively bad Philosophy/Evolutionary Psychology at its worst. The alpha/beta/omega wolves bullshit was observation of broken packs in captivity. It said nothing about behavior in the wild, just another terrible prison experiment. “Neural networks” were named by known bad analogy to 1950s pop science discussions of electrocuting captive neurons in petri dishes.     The inventors of “neural networks” knew it was a bad analogy in the 1960s. They needed an exciting name for more grant funding. Here we are decades later and we get to live in a time where people think the map is the territory, the broken analogy is the real thing. What a stupid time to be alive.
