@robinsyl@meow.social I agree with this entirely. I've read folks stories about how paperwork in other countries can be overwhelming, but I've recently gone through several processes over here that involved over a hundred different files, in total.
It's overwhelming and the information is often contradictory. I feel like the American reputation for "efficiency" is actually more marketing than anything else - the reality does not match the way this place is advertised.

@scarlet@plush.city @robinsyl@meow.social I think it was Robert Evans who said something like- the modern US has built layers of bureaucracy more complex than the Soviet Union and a level of citizen surveillance that East Germany could only have dreamed of
