3. i know vim quite well and I'd rather not overwrite muscle memory (so discarding helix and emacs for now)
4. Geany is the official IDE for my desktop, seems pretty full-featured but the git integration is not very good. Would it make sense to try Kate on gnome?

5. I checked out tried some newish editors like ecode (made with game engine so non-standard widgets), Lapce and Lite-XL (both look cool but the base installation is pretty basic, lots of plugins to hunt down).
