@jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt I just… If Mastodon users want it to be a welcoming space for small time creatives who feel like they can’t operate safely on Twitter anymore, then *it needs to be okay for us to promote our stuff.* This shouldn’t be hard to understand!

@dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt Honestly I really hope we see folks showing off their stuff on here without it being Weird? I love seeing creatives show off their works, it feels like seeing a slice of an art show!

@dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop Many instances can have rules against advertising, and many can have rules against toot advertising of thirds in exchange of money. Some people use CW to make advertising of their own stuff. To the most of people from Mastodon today, Fediverse is a New Thing and all we have to coexist new and older ways to use it. @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt

I think we want more effective ways of selecting and discovering content. I am a maker and a member of a maker space. So I am probably in your core customer base. But other people are probably less interested. There are some things I want as a maker that are really hard to find. If I could find someone could do a small amount of metal spinning for me, I could finish my Star Trek 3D Chess. @dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt

@dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt How you do it matters; different local social rules. Most people are here to not be monetized. It's social media; talk to people. Talk about process and context and stuff if you want, but talk about other stuff, too. Be here as some value of person. Regular reminders -- as in, weekly -- where your commercial presence can be found are fine. Regular "I did a thing" posting can be really effective. Community will buy, if you inform instead of advertise.

  • @dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt I don't see the problem at all with people, and even companies, trying to sell stuff here. I mean, following or boosting them is voluntary, no algorithm pushing them in your face. Unless they create nice 'sales toots', they will be shouting into the void.

  • @dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt There are instances that allow their members to showcase and advertise their work. Mastodon is just a software platform. It's the instance owners that set the rulles.

@dynamicsymmetry@wandering.shop @jenniferplusplus@tech.lgbt "Promoting your stuff" tends to present as making your mastodon point of presence an advertiser. "Can someone enjoy interacting with you even if they perceive a negative need for what you produce?" You want the answer to be true for this environment. Being the person who does (and sometimes mentions) that thing is different from advertising. (As is commerce! commerce doesn't require advertising!) More work? Could be. More effective? very plausibly.
