I've been invited to several fake conferences. They offered to be expenses-paid, but their topics were strangely generic, the invitation was sycophantic, there were prior fees (which I think was the whole point). These had the peculiarity that they were allegedly in two parts, weeks apart and in different countries.

@hugh@mastodon.nz yeah, seems this is a thing. Though its new in C++ world, and for now its just a website that tries to get folks to buy tickets with their creditcards.
