The ones I've made have vents in the top because I thought it could be an issue. But I never noticed them getting warm. Maybe the vents work more than I imagined.
The woven design of this makes it naturally vented.

@tschundler@leds.social I have strips with densely packed side emitting LEDs within a straw hat and i have to drive them hard for a good effect. They are getting warm and also touch skin, and this is problematic. I might need to somehow embed e. g. aluminium strips for heat diversion. Sorry, no photo since I am on vacation atm.
