I was in what was effectively a technical sales role while managing an engineering team. I was told that I shouldn't ever need to touch any code. I had also been told that this guy was the best engineer they ever had, so I stayed hands off for a while as he struggled with a daily update that was hitting 21 hours. One Friday we chatted and he told me he'd hit a brick wall. "Ok, let me take a look over the weekend, I'll see if anything jumps out at me." Yeahhhh... I ended up refactoring out 80% of his copy and paste code, used pass by reference rather than copy of copy of copy of huge arrays, and that was it... full update in around an hour. Total time working on the code, about four hours. He had been working on it for six months.
