@saposcat@indieauthors.social I'm fine with ghoti being an early and badly designed example of "Fun With Phonics" from a time before stnadardized spelling was even a thing. As that, it's amusing. Unfortunately that isn't how it gets tossed around online. Too many people have adopted it as their favorite "proof" example of English being flawed/ broken/ridiculous when it proves nothing of the sort. (The same kind of substitution wordplay can be done in many alphabet-based written languages.) So that annoys me.

  • @kmherkes@wandering.shop I can definitely see where you're coming from. I don't remember the contexts I've seen it in the few times I've come across it, but I remember having an 'oh neat' sort of reaction to it.
