@jnl Back in the 1970s, the family received an apology note from some cousins we had no idea existed. Back in the 1840s, our ancestors moved to a neighboring state. After the father died, the oldest two siblings sued the mother and younger siblings for the farm. Since the mother was a German Baptist who refused to defend herself in court, they lost and moved back to where the family is today. One of my mother's first cousin once removed actually had a chance to know one of the younger siblings as a young boy, and he recalled that the sibling did have a saying that one's brothers and sisters in Christ isn't necessarily the brothers and sisters of your own family. He never elaborated on why, though. I can't help but think that apology planted the seed of idea in my brother's head that grew into him suing me as his "employee", despite admitting in court that he paid me exactly $0.00 in salary or wages, knowing that my father would hobble my defense. I really wish that letter had never been sent.
