@tessaracht@kitty.town Yeah, the best spec fic is the kind that engages with its own premise, immortality in this case, instead of making it into a power fantasy. I mean power fantasies are great, people can and should go hogwild with it, but I don't find they hang together very well on sustained thought.

@ljwrites@writeout.ink yeah. I grew up reading spec fic, and so I love any work that fully develops their characters and explores what their universe means for them. I feel like if you craft an intricate world and don't explore the ramifications of your choices, you're doing yourself and your readers a big disservice. and really, even if it is a power fantasy, you should dig into what that means psychologically for your characters, how it changes them, etc. the dynamics of power are worth examining!

@ljwrites@writeout.ink I enjoy immortality books that, like you say, engage with it. I'm almost certainly thinking of this because you brought up people bringing up Black authors to you, but Octavia Butler's Patternist series does. Otherwise, I'm only a part into Luna McNamara's Psyche and Eros, but Eros's immortality figures heavily into his perspective chapters. It's fun stuff. I also consider it as yet to be determined whether I am mortal. But I rather hope I am.
