@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie Regarding your example: you can't compare boycotts of different kind. They only work on things where not buying something hurts companies (like oranges). Only saying "I don't like this" didn't work when artists went to play in Sun City, won't work here either. But yes, it's important to be loud so that those who decide on such things know it. But I presume those pro-boycott don't tend to pay the ESC via voting, so not a lot income lost for them.

@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie this is a copy paste of what I have just answered to the previous post (name included) I grew up in those awful times in S.A. 😒 *@TheComfortableSpotPodcast@mastodon.social I completely ignored the bloody thing, as I was not lucky enough to belong to a country that boycotted the contest. It is a shame that they allowed people from that country, led by a sick shit to take part! Also, what is European about the middle east? 😒* The guy is Irish, they boycotted.

@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie As a South African: The fact that you didn't sell us weapons (and later, oil) was a bigger deal. It helped drive our fascist regime towards surrender, which in turn drove it towards the negotiating table. But the weapons and energy embargoes could not have happened until the smaller embargoes had shown the way. Did sports and entertainment sanctions drive South Africa to revolution? No. Would the later more effective sanctions have happened if the sports and entertainment sanctions didn't happen? Also no.
