I would expect that more often than not they simply profit from an associated repair business of some sort and are purposely trying to get you to ruin your stuff.

Yet my dealership routinely asks if I would like "throttle body cleaner" for a couple of hundred bucks. The associates have learned not to ask me, after I ask them to show me anything from the manufacturer recommending it…
